LIBEL CEASE AND DESIST LETTER TEMPLATE FAQ
What is a libel cease and desist letter?
A libel cease and desist letter is a formal written notice telling someone to stop publishing or posting false written statements about you or your business. Libel usually refers to written or recorded defamation, such as online posts, reviews, emails, articles, or printed materials that damage your reputation.
When should I use a libel cease and desist letter?
Use this letter when false written statements about you or your business have been posted online, emailed, printed, or otherwise published to others, and they are harming or likely to harm your reputation, relationships, or livelihood. It is often used before or alongside legal action to give the other party a chance to remove and correct the statements.
What should a libel cease and desist letter include?
A clear letter should identify you and the recipient, list the specific written statements you consider libelous, say where and when they were published, explain why they are false and harmful, demand that the statements stop, require removal and retraction, set a deadline for compliance, and reserve your rights to take further steps if needed.
Is a libel cease and desist letter legally binding by itself?
The letter itself is not a court order, but it serves as formal notice that you object to the statements and have asked for them to stop. If the recipient continues publishing libelous content, the letter and their response (or lack of response) may become important evidence if you later pursue legal remedies.
Do I have to list every single libelous statement in the letter?
You should identify key written statements and where they appeared with enough detail that the recipient clearly understands what you are referring to. You do not need to catalog every repetition if the same libel was reposted many times, but you may reference representative examples and note that they are part of a broader pattern.
Can AI Lawyer help me customize this Libel Cease and Desist Letter?
Yes. AI Lawyer can help you adapt this Libel Cease and Desist Letter template by inserting the exact written statements, links, platforms, and deadlines you want, while keeping the tone clear, firm, and professional.
