CAR BILL OF SALE TEMPLATE FAQ
What is a car bill of sale?
A car bill of sale is a written document that records the details of a vehicle sale between a seller and a buyer. It usually includes information about the car (VIN, year, make, model), the purchase price, the date of sale, and the names and signatures of both parties. It serves as proof that ownership was transferred.
Do I need a bill of sale to sell or buy a car?
In many places, a bill of sale is recommended or required when transferring ownership of a vehicle, especially for private-party sales. Even where not strictly required, it is a helpful record for the buyer, seller, and motor vehicle agency, and can reduce disputes about the price, date, or condition of the car.
What information should a car bill of sale include?
A solid car bill of sale typically includes: the full names and addresses of buyer and seller, vehicle details (VIN, year, make, model, body style, color), sale date and purchase price, odometer reading, statement about liens, “as-is” or warranty terms, and signatures of both parties. Some states or countries have extra requirements.
Is a car bill of sale a title or registration?
No. A bill of sale is not the same as a vehicle title or registration. It is proof of the agreement and transaction between buyer and seller. The buyer usually still needs to use the title and follow local motor vehicle agency procedures to register the car, pay taxes or fees, and have the title transferred.
Should I sell a car “as is” using this bill of sale?
Many private used-car sales are made “as is,” meaning the seller does not promise that the vehicle is free of defects. This template includes an “as-is” clause and a space for any limited warranties if you choose to offer them. Local law may still protect buyers against certain fraud or undisclosed issues.
Can AI Lawyer help me write a car bill of sale?
Yes. AI Lawyer can help you fill out this Car Bill of Sale template with your vehicle details, buyer and seller information, and any special terms you want to include, so you have a clear, readable document ready to sign.
