SEPARATION AGREEMENT FOR UNMARRIED COUPLES TEMPLATE FAQ

What is a separation agreement for unmarried couples?

A separation agreement for unmarried couples is a written agreement between partners who are ending their relationship but were not legally married. It helps record how they will divide shared property, handle debts, manage housing arrangements, and address other practical matters after separation. It can make the breakup process more organized and reduce future misunderstandings.

Why do you need a separation agreement for unmarried couples?

You need this agreement to clearly document who keeps what, who pays which debts, and how shared responsibilities will be handled after the relationship ends. Without a written agreement, disagreements can arise over money, property, pets, or the home. A clear document helps both parties move forward with a better understanding of their rights and obligations.

When should you use a separation agreement for unmarried couples?

Use this agreement when unmarried partners decide to separate and need to sort out practical issues such as property division, shared bills, bank accounts, household items, or living arrangements. It can also be useful when the parties share pets or have other joint responsibilities. If children are involved, local laws may require separate parenting or support documents or court approval.

How to write a separation agreement for unmarried couples?

Start by identifying both parties and stating the date of separation. Then describe how property, debts, housing, vehicles, accounts, pets, and any other shared matters will be handled. If relevant, include provisions about financial support, confidentiality, and dispute resolution. Finish with signature lines for both parties, and add notarization only if desired or required by local law.
